The talented midfielder, who had been plagued by injuries as a youngster, has finally made his long-awaited move to Europe.
La Liga side Sevilla have made their sixth summer signing to capture Sao Paulo midfielder Ganso, for an undisclosed fee. Ganso, now 26, was a highly-rated wonderkid and tipped for greatness back in 2011. Unfortunately though for the Brazilian, a few troublesome injuries – including a ruptured cruciate ligament – halted his development and meant most European sides were reluctant to take a risk on the player.
Ganso lost his sharp agility and rapid acceleration over time as a result of his severe injury, but his technical ability has continued to shine – he’s unafraid of defensive responsibilities whilst his passing is excellent, and he knows when to hold up play too. There are areas of his game he’d like to improve over time, namely his consistency when tackling and he’d aim to add more goals to his game too, but with practice and competitive matches under his belt, he’ll continue to grow with experience.
Ganso thankful as he departs Brazil
The midfielder, who came through the ranks alongside Barcelona’s Neymar at Santos’ youth academy, was expected to breakthrough at roughly the same time as his compatriot. As quoted by Ganso on the club’s official website, he said he wanted to thank Sao Paulo for “everything” they’d done for him, and the club would “forever have a place” in his heart – but the “time was right” to move to Europe.
Sevilla aiming to continue improving with new season ahead
The reported transfer fee is believed to be in the region of £8million pounds, and new boss Jorge Sampaoli has already made some shrewd signings as he looks to bolster the squad options ahead of a challenging campaign with UEFA Champions League competition on the horizon.
Franco Vazquez, Joaquin Correa, Matias Kranevitter, Hiroshi Kiyotake and Pablo Sarabia have all signed deals to join the Rojiblancos already this summer – Ganso will be hoping to avoid injuries and hit the ground running in Spain with the domestic season only a month away.
